The Automotive Industry – 20 years of automotive safety innovation

Special Awards, 2010

The automotive industry won a special Prince Michael International Road Safety Award, for its contribution to road safety over the last 20 years.

Since 1989, the number of people killed and injured on the UK’s roads has fallen considerably. All road deaths have declined by 58%, and car occupant deaths, which make up a significant proportion of road fatalities, have fallen by 56%. The Department for Transport largely attributes this to improved vehicle safety.

A short report Saving Lives: Twenty years of automotive innovation commemorates the award. It contains a timeline, highlighting some of the industry’s major safety achievements, and contributions from leading commentators.
