The city of S?o Jos? dos Campos, Brazil, and The Global Road Safety Partnership
The Brazilian city of São José dos Campos has been successful in using a “Proactive Partnership Strategy” to achieve a significant and sustained reduction in road crash death and serious injury in the city from 2006 onwards.
The Proactive Partnership Strategy is a process which is now being implemented in 20 Brazilian towns in 7 states in order to develop an advanced road safety culture driven by analysis of 30 days reliable fatality and serious injury data. The result has been a decrease of the number of people who are killed or seriously injured when travelling, and an improvement of the quality of life for all citizens. Over the last 3 years the number of people killed and seriously injured in road crashes in São José dos Campos has been decreased by 48%.
What is remarkable about the PPS is that all activities are undertaken largely on a voluntary basis. Activities are supported by partners of one or multiple sectors - public, private and civil society. Road safety is marketed in such a manner that it is desirable and effective. People in São José dos Campos can see that better road safety is good for business, the community, the family and the individual. It makes sense, and the social investment gets good social and financial returns.
