VOSA & HA South East International Transport Pilot

Public Education, 2007

The South East International Transport Pilot is an initiative by Vehicle & Operator Services Agency (VOSA) and Highways Agency (HA) to reduce the number of incidents involving international heavy goods vehicles on our roads.

The programme uses an intelligence led intervention embracing Automatic Number Plate Recognition and Weigh in Motion Systems to target overweight HGV’s, using the M20/A2 corridor, where the vast majority of trucks enter the UK.

Supported by an extensive use of educational and briefing material on board the ferries foreign drivers receive a simple message in 5 languages inviting drivers to pick up the information leaflets. The HA has funded 40,000 lenses to be handed out at the ports of Calais, Coquelles (Euro-Tunnel) and Dunkirk, by UK Immigration Service.

The scheme has the support of the Freight Transport Association (FTA) and the International Road transport Union (IRU).
