Widely varying car safety standards highlighted

15 November 2020

The hugely differing vehicle safety standards across the world are highlighted in recent reports:

  • Recently released independent crash test results from Global NCAP and Latin NCAP show that some car manufacturers are still producing cars with zero star safety ratings – apparently morally comfortable with their customers buying them and families travelling in them.
  • In contrast new road safety measures are making Australian roads safer. The Australian Government has announced a Regulation Impact Statement (RIS) to reduce light-vehicle crashes and trauma through the fitment of autonomous emergency braking (AEB), which will now be compulsory for all new vehicle models from July 2022 and all models by July 2024.
  • Last month Euro NCAP announced the release of its second series of Assisted Driving Tests.
