Programa Esquina Segura (Safety Corner Program)

Road Safety Management, 2021

In an effort to improve road safety at urban intersections without traffic lights, the Fortaleza City Hall implemented the Safety Corner Program in 2017. The results obtained, with observational "before" and "after" studies and a comparison group method, demonstrate the effectiveness of the program, with an average reduction of 53% in the expected number of total road crashes and an average reduction of 60% and 48% in the expected number of road crashes with and without injured victims, respectively.
Aim and objectives

The Program aims to build a culture of respect for traffic and parking regulations to ensure drivers have adequate visibility to safely carry out the crossing of lanes. Named Safety Corner Program, it is characterized as a short-term action to reduce deaths and injuries in traffic in Fortaleza and consists of the strategic realignment of communication and enforcement activities, the renewal of horizontal and vertical signage, implementation of signs, branding of pipes and tacks to alert the prohibition of parking at intersections without traffic lights.
