The Australian Automobile Association and the Australian Government – Keys2Drive

Young Drivers, 2014

This is a joint initiative of the Australian Automobile Association (AAA) and the Australian Government which is the most extensive novice driver training and road safety education initiative in Australia’s history.

Keys2Drive consists of three major components:

• A free 60 minute lesson delivered by a keys2drive accredited professional driving instructor to learner drivers whilst being accompanied by their supervising driver
• A website for novice drivers
• A voluntary accreditation scheme for professional driving instructors

The study found that Keys2Drive learners achieve a higher than average number of hours under supervision, are less likely to break the road rules on the first six months of their P-Plates and less likely to crash when they are on their P-Plates.

Young drivers who completed the keys2drive survey reported a crash rate of 4.5%, which was less than half the rate of 9.9%in New South Wales and 9.6% in Queensland reported in the other studies.
