M1 Jn 6a-10 Motorway Widening Scheme

Applied Technology, 2008

The M1 in Hertfordshire is one of the most congested sections of the UK motorway network, with daily traffic volumes of 160,000 vehicles. To ensure road worker and motorist safety, the temporary speed limit is being implemented by an average speed control which is effective and non-intrusive to the drivers.

As a result of SPECS usage, vehicle speeds are being effectively managed, traffic flows maintained, and injury related accidents have been reduced by 54% compared to the three years preceding the project. The annual benefit to the economy and society associated with this casualty reduction is £6.8m.
