London Borough of Merton – ?Walk Safe?, Child Pedestrian Training programme for special needs, disabled and mainstream schoolchildren, and ?Where I want to be? Adult mobility programme

Commendation

Highly Commended, 2008

To encourage a greater knowledge of road safety issues and to promote independent travel for disabled and special education needs adults.

The ‘Walk Safe’, Child Pedestrian Training programme was offered to three special school units in deprived areas with high child casualties, and three mainstream schools. The programme involved 1:1 teaching, curbside training, and discussions about the sounds, speeds, and flows of traffic. This training resulted in a dramatic drop to just one child KSI last year.

The ‘Where I Want To Be’ programme involves a referral and assessment, followed by two initial visits to enable a training programme to be devised. A DVD is used to deliver training and engage people. Merton now has 4 travel trainers and has trained 15 people.
