Standard Life & Lothian Borders

School Community based, 2001

In May 1998 Lothian and Borders Police Road Safety Unit approached Standard Life to seek sponsorship for a junior road safety officers scheme within the force area (five local authorities). The scheme - seeks to encourage two senior pupils from each primary school to 'apply' for the job of JRSO. The JRSOs are given specific tasks throughout the year to spread the Road Safety messages amongst their peers rather than the more normal method of adults doing it.

One of the most successful resources has been a CD ROM, which itself was designed by JRSOs. The scheme has been highly successful and has impressed the Inspectorate of Schools and the Scottish Road Safety Campaign with the scheme set to run for a five-year period, providing a total of over 3000 packs.

Lothian and Borders Police Road Safety Unit with Standard Life were an award winner in 2001.
