Report from the UN Road Safety Collaboration and NGO Alliance meetings
Recently, two parallel meetings were held in Chania, Crete. The Sixth Global meeting of the NGO Alliance and the 27th Meeting of the UN Road Safety Collaboration. RoadSafe was a founder member of the alliance which now represents 220 NGOs from 90 countries.
RoadSafe has also been a long-term NGO member of the UN Collaboration. This meeting was attended by some 120 delegates.
Many members of the RoadSafe network contributed to the meetings including a behavioural change workshop delivered by Dan Campsall and his colleagues from RSA and the successful application from Highways England to become a member of the UNRSC.
Our partners from The Towards Zero Foundation sponsored the NGO Alliance meeting which included a Stop the Crash demonstration and many workshops were led by former Prince Michael Awards winners. Recently EASST celebrated its 10th birthday.
Sadly The Prince was unable to attend but recorded an opening address.
The meetings also provided an opportunity to make inputs into the planning of the 2020 Ministerial conference in Stockholm.
The Towards Zero Foundation launched the 50 by 30 campaign which calls for a new target to halve road deaths and serious injuries in a new decade of SDG action for road safety to 2030. A new target and a new decade of action will help to save 675,000 lives a year, accelerate progress in global road injury prevention, and work towards a world eventually free from road fatalities and serious injuries.
Looking forward to Global Road Safety Week Prince Michael features in a new film which draws together the Prince’s thoughts on the week with him giving excellent references to the importance of better road and vehicle design, the work of the FIA Foundation, Global NCAP and his own Road Safety Awards
