Award for Community Speedwatch
The annual European Excellence in Road Safety Awards on 26 June 2018 showcased six inspiring initiatives from France, Hungary, Slovenia, Spain and the United Kingdom. CSW Online, United Kingdom has won one winner for raising the profile and effectiveness of Community Speedwatch as a way for residents to support the police in tackling local issues
Community Speedwatch (CSW) has been a UK initiative in which local volunteers monitor how fast vehicles are going by using detection devices. Those speeding are subsequently referred to the police. The goal is to effectively educate and inform the public about risky driving.
Working closely with police, CSW Online was created as a means to modernise CSW and better coordinate groups of volunteers, helping them work using similar standards and procedures. It has helped CSW gain in credibility and reputation and manages nearly 3 000 trained volunteers. They span several counties and are used by a growing number of UK police forces.
